Frequently Asked Questions
Moot Court is a public speaking activity that simulates oral argument in front of the Supreme Court. Teams of two compete against each other on two separate issues of constitutional law; each speaker covers one issue. Judges, just like real Justices in the Supreme Court, ask students questions to test their arguments. Rounds are judged based on which of the two teams did better overall in four categories: knowledge, response to questions, delivery, and argumentation.
The first issue is whether the President has the authority as the Executive to remove the Chair of the Federal Reserve without cause. The second issue is whether a district court has the ability to issue an injunction or mandamus to the President to force him to reinstate the Chair. Both issues this year are relevant (current topic in scholarship) and impactful.
Each family must pay an annual affiliation fee (affiliation opens in mid-July). After affiliating, families may register for any one of the four qualifying tournaments. Annual affiliation fees and registration for tournaments are both priced the same: $55.
HSMCA hosts 2-day tournaments which only take place in the afternoons and evenings of each day (the mornings are free for most time zones). Tournaments take place Friday/Saturday or Monday/Tuesday. For specific dates, check out the “tournaments” tab.
High schoolers—whether public, private, or home schooled. If you either have graduated high school or are 19 after September 1, you are ineligible. Otherwise, so long as you are taking high school classes, you are eligible.
Attend a summer camp! PHC and Lasting Impact! both host summer camps teaching you the basics of Moot Court. It’s a great opportunity to learn more about the event and test out if it’s a good fit for you.
